COMPOSITION
Each chewable tablet contains:
- Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) 60,000 IU
CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY
Cholecalciferol is a fat-soluble vitamin that promotes calcium absorption in the gut and maintains adequate serum calcium and phosphate levels to enable normal mineralization of bone. It also plays a role in immune modulation and cell proliferation.
INDICATIONS AND USAGE
Indicated in the treatment and prevention of Vitamin D3 deficiency, rickets, osteomalacia, and as a supplement in osteoporosis management. Also used in cases of chronic hypoparathyroidism.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Hypersensitivity to cholecalciferol or any excipient in the formulation. Hypercalcemia, hypervitaminosis D, or malabsorption syndrome.
PRECAUTIONS
Caution in patients with renal impairment, cardiovascular disease, or those receiving digitalis. Monitor serum calcium and phosphate during high-dose therapy.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Interactions may occur with thiazide diuretics, antiepileptics (phenytoin, phenobarbital), corticosteroids, orlistat, and cholestyramine, reducing efficacy.
PREGNANCY & LACTATION
Vitamin D3 supplementation is often necessary in pregnancy and lactation. Should be administered in recommended doses to avoid fetal hypercalcemia.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
- One tablet once weekly for 6-8 weeks, then once monthly as maintenance. Or as directed by a physician.
- Best taken with a fatty meal for optimal absorption.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
Well-tolerated at recommended doses. High doses may cause hypercalcemia, nausea, vomiting, polyuria, and weakness. Rarely, allergic skin reactions may occur.
